The Evil Eye
The evil eye is more than just a concept. While the concept of the evil eye is what allows us to recognize what it is, the evil eye is a mysterious phenomenon that has been recognized cross culturally for thousands of years.
Have you ever been in a situation where you finally got the nice thing that meant a lot to you and that you were excited to have, and in your excitement, you shared this thing with everyone, and somehow your life got worse, and you ended up losing the thing that meant so much to you? Have you found yourself in a time in which things just kept going bad, breaking, arguments and conflicts abounded, and it seems like no matter what you did or how good you did, the world was against you, the Universe was conspiring against you, and you just couldn’t get ahead but seemed, instead, to keep losing?
It may have been the evil eye placed on you. In this blog post, I am sharing what the evil eye is and the psychological impacts in addition to the spiritual and universal impacts that the evil eye has.
The Evil Eye
Now, you would think that we would live in a world in which we would all just be happy for each other when one gets nice things, but we live in a competitive world where egos abound. When we see someone with nice things, there is a tendency to either a) be jealous or b) to be overly admiring. We also live in a world in which there is malice, and it can be challenging to comprehend why this happens until we understand that the human heart is highly vulnerable and hardens to protect itself from degradation and harm without conscious intervention to keep it open in loving. Ultimately, the evil eye comes from the illusion of lack, of scarcity, and of separation, but what is the evil eye?
What is the Evil Eye?
The evil eye is both a cause and an effect. It is both an initiation and a response. The evil eye starts when one individual looks at another with a glare of malice, with a glare of envy, or with a glare that is overly admiring. The effect or response to the evil eye is a kind of spiritual and psychological harm to the individual being glared upon. Hence, the evil eye is thought to invoke a curse.
The evil eye has been documented going as far back as at least ancient Mesopotamia, which existed 5,000 years ago. The earliest known writing of the evil eye is in cuneiform writings from this civilization dating around 3,000 years ago.
In ancient Greece, the evil eye was known as “baskania,” which refers to both envy and malice. Philosophers of this time like Plato and Plutarch both mention the concept. There is evidence in eye-shaped pendants, pottery, and other decorative items of protective measures being taken to ward off the evil eye. The Romans also believed in the evil eye, and they likewise incorporated eye motifs into various objects.
The evil eye has appeared in many different civilizations such as Egypt, Sumer, Greece, Rome, and in Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions.
What is the Curse of the Evil Eye?
The evil eye is more than just a look. The glare of the evil eye is a supernatural force similar to a laser. Like a laser can cut through that which it meets with penetration and destruction, the glare of the evil eye penetrates the aura, the spirit, and the psyche of the individual being glared upon, and works to curse this individual through dampening or damaging their field.
The evil eye is thought to come from a place of malice, of greed, and of a desperation to acquire. As such, the evil is rooted in lack, scarcity, and the illusion of separation.
When one has been glared upon with an evil eye to the point of destruction, there are many seemingly mysterious things which occur even though the individual may be doing everything “right.”
The curse of the evil eye is what happens when the one who has the good fortune and attracts the evil eye of those around them loses their good fortune through the curse that the envy, malice, or over admiration manifests as in their life.
Through being contained in the evil eye, the person seems to take on this glare, and it comes to manifest detriment in their life.
Heliodorus of Emesa in the ancient Greek romance Aethiopica, may have said it best,
“When any one looks at what is excellent with an envious eye he fills the surrounding atmosphere with a pernicious quality, and transmits his own envenomed exhalations into whatever is nearest to him.”
While the evil eye can be a malicious glare, it can also be an envious glare, or a glare of over admiration that one has no intention to cast. In fact, some cultures view the ability to bestow a curse with the evil eye as an unfortunate burden or a curse in itself.
Indications of Being Cursed by Evil Eye
Serial trippings (a.k.a. bad luck): when things go wrong, they go wrong in a serial spiral such as accidents, a series of unfortunate events, things breaking, losing valuables, etc. While this may appear random, it is oftentimes associated with the curse of the evil eye.
Sudden Illness: unexplained illness such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue that modern medicine cannot easily diagnose can be a result of the curse of the evil eye
Financial damage: sudden and unexpected financial losses, failed business deals, or accumulating debts can be the result of the curse of the evil eye. The negative energy of envy can block prosperity and success
Relationship Discord: unexplained arguments, tension, or distance between loved ones can be a result of the curse of the evil eye. The disruption of harmony is a common symptom seen in families, friendships, and romantic relationships of the curse of the evil eye.
Energy Drain: constantly feeling drained, fatigued, or lacking motivation can be an indication of the curse of the evil eye. The evil eye erodes your spiritual strength.
Emotional Disturbances: intense, often paralyzing, feelings of anxiety, jealousy, or depression, can be signed of a targeted evil eye.
Feeling Eerie Presence: if you feel as if you are always being watched and like there is some dark, domineering, presence, this is an indication of the curse of the evil eye.
Self Esteem: curses and negative energy often cause people to feel less worthy or less capable than they are, which can lead to feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness.
A stringent sign of the curse of the Evil Eye is feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders or experiencing back pains, as if stabbed in the back.
The dark energy of the evil eye may attract energetic parasites like higher-dimensional beings, etheric snakes, bugs, or even demonic entities. The affected may see these entities in dreams and wake up with bite marks.
Protection from the Evil Eye
Of course, once one has heard about or even has experienced the fact of the evil eye curse first hand, there is a desire to protect oneself from the evil eye.
The earliest known way ancient people attempted to repel the evil eye are found in amulets going as far back as 3,300 B.C. in the alabaster idols of Tell Brak. The blue glass evil eyes which are still common today only started appearing around 1500 B.C., and while wearing amulets and pendants and having the physical evil eye motif on items, there are other ways to ward off or to repel the evil eye.
Clove: Having just one clove in your pocket or in your bag is thought to ward off the negative energy of the evil eye. Once you leave the social situation, just dispose of the clove for the energy to be away from you.
Privacy and Secrecy: While you may still have nice things that you like, use discretion when deciding who is a friend. Your coworkers may very well cast an evil eye when you buy something nice for yourself with the money you worked for to buy it. Sometimes, keeping things to yourself is the best way to protect yourself even if you want to love everyone around you and have this reflected back to you.
Give all Credit to a Higher Power: Christians give glory to God or Jesus, Mulsims give glory to Allah, spiritual people give credit to the Universe. Whatever you believe, when you have nice things, say something like, “the Universe wanted it so,” or “Allah is the master Creator,” or “all Glory to Jesus.” This takes the direction away from yourself.
Be Meditative, Focused, and Undistracted: the more distracted, unfocused, and mentally bogged down you are, the more susceptible you are to the evil eye.
The Evil Eye
The evil eye can significantly impact your life for the worse. While it can be tempting to walk with our hearts open to the world thinking that everyone is loving and kind and happy to see us succeed without malice, envy, or over admiration, this stance is foolish and naive. It can lead to your detriment with no one to help because they secretly enjoy seeing your cursed (even if only subconsciously).
It is best to take the evil eye as something that is a component of the 3-D world and to accept it so that you can stay protected. Yes, it does suck when you can’t openly walk around thinking everyone is a loving friend and that you are safe, but it can help you to establish deeper intimacy and appreciation for those who do make it into your close circle and have proven themselves to be people are spiritually mature enough to reflect on their own internal dispositions. Furthermore, taking action to protect yourself from evil eye attacts, which sometimes are unconscious, is imperative for your success (and basic survival) in this world.
